34th Military Band-Aid Softball Tournament

The Military Band-Aid Softball Tournament is the second-largest military softball tournament in the world and is proudly hosted in the scenic city of Colorado Springs, Colorado. Recognized as one of the nation’s top military communities and centrally located within the continental United States, Colorado Springs is a natural home for this prestigious event.

Originally established for medical personnel across various military branches, the tournament quickly gained popularity and grew year after year. However, participation began to decline in the late 1990s and early 2000s due to increased military deployments. To sustain and expand the competition, first responders—including security forces and firefighters—were invited to join in 2003. This expansion revitalized the event, and in 2007, the tournament officially opened to all military varsity teams, marking a significant turning point in its history.

HISTORY

The inaugural Band-Aid Tournament was held at the United States Air Force Academy in 1989, conceived by the late Clyde Maddox and Dave Miles, both medics with the 10th Medical Group at USAFA. Their vision was to create a softball tournament exclusively for medical personnel, drawing teams from across the country. They aimed to offer an affordable, highly competitive, and, most importantly, fun event. Under this format, the tournament thrived for many years.

However, in the late 1990s and early 2000s, participation declined due to increased military deployments. In response, the tournament expanded in 2003 to include first responders, welcoming Security Forces and Firefighters. By 2006, Military Varsity teams from across the country began requesting to join, leading to the tournament’s official expansion in 2007—a decision that transformed its trajectory.

Since then, the Band-Aid Tournament has grown into one of the largest and most prestigious military softball tournaments in the nation. The 2023 event hosted over 90 teams, second only to the USSA Military World Tournament in Augusta, Georgia. Many Military Varsity coaches now view Band-Aid as the “Pre-World Tournament,” cementing its reputation as a premier event in the military softball community.
