THE HONOR BELL FOUNDATION ANNOUNCES ITS NEW VIRTUAL BELL HONORS PROGRAM

Since 2016 veterans who have been interred at Fort Logan National Cemetery have had Bell Honors tolled for them as part of the military honors rendered at their funeral or memorial services. With the many requests to perform Bell Honors at other locations increasing each year, we are announcing the opportunity to have them rendered virtually — allowing this unique, moving ceremony to reach every corner of the state and beyond.

A virtual Bell Honors ceremony is identical in every way to the honors rendered as part of the military honors carried out daily by the Honor Bell team: the Bell Major calls the Guard to attention and marks the beginning of each toll with a ceremonial mace. While the Bell Sentinel stands watch, the Belladier pulls a lanyard attached to the Honor Bell’s clapper, sounding the toll. This process repeats every seven seconds, for seven tolls. At the end of the ceremony, the Bell Guard party salutes the deceased veteran.

How is virtual tolling different?
What makes the virtual Bell Honors ceremony different is that the entire service is captured on video and uploaded for viewing by the loved ones of the departed (it may also be published online for wider viewing if they so desire). The video includes a title noting the deceased’s rank, name, and branch of service; and each toll is marked with its meaning at the bottom of the screen. You can view an example of a virtual Bell Honors ceremony here.

THE FIRST VIRTUAL BELL HONORS WERE PERFORMED IN HONOR OF 2ND LT FRANKLIN MACON, USAAC, IN NOVEMBER 2020.

Virtual Bell Honors are a dignified, honorable way to memorialize the passing of a loved one who has served their country. They can be performed on the day of their service, or years later, if desired — even on anniversary dates that might be significant to the family or loved one. These virtual honors are our way of extending our mission beyond the Denver area out into the rest of Colorado and the country.

Virtual Bell Honors are available for a suggested donation of $50, which helps to offset operating expenses of the Bell Guard mission that day. Use the form below to complete your donation and fill out information about the honoree.

How can I request Virtual Bell Honors?
Virtual Bell Honors may be rendered for any veteran who has passed away, by any person. Simply make a donation using the special form here, and enter in the name and other information of the honoree in the form that appears after the checkout process. If you prefer to make a donation another way (using one of the other donation forms on our site, a recurring donation, or via check), please contact us to let us know of your donation and whom we should honor.
